'Don't bring back
sus laws' [editor's
title]
Any move by Brown to increase the resort to stop and search and relax its conditions of use would be contrary to the findings of a an official Met report of less than a year ago.
The study concluded that officers undertaking stop and search should provide a "clear rationale" for stopping one individual rather than another. To do otherwise, the Met then argued, would further damage community relations.
For this government to now consider dispensing with such conditions altogether is worse than reckless; for Cameron to seek credit for such proposals is worse than opportunistic.
The police have a duty to serve us all and a right to expect our cooperation in return, but they are not beyond the requirement to act justly in the process.
