Within London boroughs/constituencies, we have significantly improved our position over the last 3 years compared to other local parties. In 1999, the Brent and Harrow Green vote was well below the London average and the Brent East vote was only slightly above average. In 2000, the Brent and Harrow vote was close to average. In 2001, the Brent East vote was well above average and Simone came 7th out of 34 candidates.

European Parliament elections 10 June 1999

The European elections were held under proportional representation for the first time in the UK last year.  Despite having fewer votes nationwide than in the 1989 election, two greens were elected to the European Parliament: Jean Lambert form the London Region and Caroline Lucas form the South East region.  In London, the relatively modest  vote of 7.67 % gained us the last of the 10 seats allocated, partly because smaller parties split the vote.

As can be seen from the table below, only in Brent East was the Green vote higher than the London average.  This may reflect the fact that there was relatively more Green Party activity in the area.

This suggests that there are 'easy' gains to be made across the Brent and Harrow constituencies and that the Green vote could be a lot higher.

Kilburn by-election 11 March 1999

Candidate Rob Whitley polled 7.6 % of votes cast, putting us in third place, behind Labour and Conservatives.  Large parts of the ward were leafleted and canvassed - the response was generally very good.

Unfortunately Labour supporters were also out in force and they achieved a large majority.
