Letter to the Editor, Wembley Observer - 8 March 2001 Shroud of secrecy must end Dear Editor I was pleased to see your article about the GLA setting up an Investigative Committee to look into the transport of radioactive waste through London (Wembley Observer, 8 March). This was a priority issue for the Green Party before the GLA election and we are delighted that Green GLA member, Darren Johnson will chair the Committee. Following the recent derailment of a nuclear train in Scotland and the disastrous train crash in Yorkshire, it is obvious that freak accidents do happen. Transportation of nuclear waste is shrouded in secrecy to the extent that most of the emergency services do not know how they would cope with a serious accident. Groups such as the Nuclear Trains Action Group and Cricklewood Against Nuclear Trains have done a lot to raise awareness of the issues. Residents living close to the train routes and indeed in London as a whole have a right to know about the dangers, including health risks from the low level radiation which is continually emitted from the nuclear waste flasks. Yours faithfully Tim Turner |
