Article in Wembley Observer - 20 January 2000 GREENS DEMAND AN URBAN BOOST The scramble is on for Euro cash to tackle urban poverty with new job training, a London Euro MP revealed. Substantially more money is becoming available to communities through the European Social Fund to help combat poverty and discrimination through skills training, Green Party MEP Jean Lambert told a packed meeting at Willesden Library Centre on Thursday last week. But there was a need for voluntary and community organisations in areas like Brent to work with local authorities when applying for funding, she warned. The Green Party has now gone on the offensive in launching its London strategy for the Mayor of London campaign. Darren Johnson, its candidate for Mayor and for the London Assembly, told the meeting: "We aim to create 80,000 jobs in London alone, in areas such as recycling, energy conservation and public transport. Our proposals will tackle unemployment and help regenerate communities as well as protect the environment." Greens are pressing for cooperation between the new Greater London Authority, being set up in May, and the European Union to boost deprived urban communities and encourage enterprise. |
