'Pavement is still being blocked' [editor's title and contributed picture]

I wish to update your readers on our campaign to put a stop to Asda delivery lorries endangering the lives of pedestrians and other road users in Wembley ("If motorists did this they'd be booked", Harrow Times, 1 May).

Unfortunately, lorries continue to block the pedestrian crossing on a slip road outside the supermarket loading bay; or to park on the pavement along Forty Lane; or to occupy a bus stop; all of which force pedestrians into the main road - come day or night. Since last contacting your paper, the Green Party has accumulated yet more photographic evidence, which I recommend readers view at http://brentandharrow.greenparty.org.uk/asda_danger.htm

On average, nine people are killed on Britain's roads each day and the Green Party continues its resolve to put a stop to this dangerous and irresponsible activity outside Asda. Yet we were staggered to learn the response of Brent Council to your enquiries, that they felt "unable to comment during the period before an election". I am sure voters and non-voters alike would be appalled to learn that road safety is being dubiously subordinated to the political calendar.

Indeed, as the recent GLA candidate, let me acknowledge and add thanks to over 10,000 Green voters across Brent and Harrow - a sizable 45% increase in our voters since 2004. We will be back to honour their confidence in us and advance their number again.

In the meantime, alongside two re-elected Greens in City Hall, we shall continue to speak out against bad policies and practices, and to propose better alternatives - for the sakes of everybody today and our children's children into the future.
