Darren Johnson, Green Party Candidate for Mayor of London is visiting the London Borough of Brent on 18th March at 2.00 p.m. He and Assembly candidate Dr Shahrar Ali will be calling for an end to nuclear waste being transported through the Borough of Brent. Trains carrying spent nuclear fuel rods make regular journeys through London passing through built-up areas on ordinary rail lines close to housing, schools and businesses.

“It is ridiculous that in this day in age we are still relying on energy from dangerous nuclear power stations and carting train loads of nuclear waste through densely populated areas of London. Greens are calling for a complete shut-down of the nuclear industry, an end to trains carrying nuclear waste and massive investment in clean and green technology such as solar power,” said Darren.

“People living close to sidings want to know about their exposure to radioactivity, so that they can make up their own minds about health risks. Yet the government recently admitted that neither they, nor their operator, could come up with a figure for total volume held or transported annually. In other words, we are dealing with an unknown quantity. In other words, we are dealing with a public-private initiative,” said Shahrar.

“As Mayor I will use my planning powers to ensure that every new building in London is a zero emission building. New buildings will be refused planning permission unless they are fitted with solar panels. Solar technology is not just for sun-soaked countries - it can be used anywhere from the Arctic to the Equator,” concluded Darren.
