| 4 May 2000 - Three Greens elected to the London Assembly
A Mayor and Assembly for London On 4 May 2000, Londoners elected the new Greater London Authority, consisting of a Mayor and 25 members of the London Assembly. Like the recent elections for the European Parliament, Scottish and Welsh Assemblies, the London Assembly election was held under a form of proportional representation. This gave the Green Party a much better chance of gaining seats than the traditional 'first past the post' system. The responsibilities of the Mayor and Assembly appear to be tailor-made for the Green Party. The three core areas where the GLA will have influence are Transport, Environment/Planning and Economic Development. These are all areas where we will be able to speak with a 'Strong Green Voice' in London. Visit our GLA members' website See the photo of some of our candidates for the London Assembly election. |

Campaign, Results and a Big Thank You
See Election Results for a summary of voting in Brent and Harrow and comparison with the European elections last year. See also full Results for the Brent and Harrow Constituency, including votes for other parties. A big thank you must go to all who helped with the election campaign- delivering leaflets, holding stalls and writing to the local papers. Also to those who generously gave donations and purchased election bonds. Since we gained 9% in the constituency poll, we have retained our deposit and those who purchased bonds will soon receive a redemption cheque. If you do not wish to redeem your bond(s), you can be assured that the money will be put to good use by the local party, building up a firm base and widening our network of supporters for future elections. |
