Keep taking your Greens!

I'd like to put some perspective on the Greens by-election results. Some might call this spin, but I endeavour to be factual.

Contrary to your otherwise excellent report ('Keeping it in the family', Times, 22 June), we have not stood in Preston ward before, and only once in Fryent ward. Nor, sadly, were the Greens able to benefit from any direct exposure from the general election there - since we did not stand in Brent North.

The results achieved by the Greens come after a modest amount of campaigning by us - one leaflet in each ward, compared to eight from the Lib Dems (according to one of their staff).

If anything, our results are both encouraging and suggest a welcome ceiling on the amount of propaganda electors are willing to withstand (let alone our precious rainforests).

The Greens in Brent are under no illusions about the scale of the undertaking ahead of us. We also have a strategy of winning at least one council seat in the borough-wide elections next May - as many Greens have already achieved across the country.

May I take this opportunity both to congratulate all recently elected opposition candidates, and to applaud the exactly 2,005 individuals in Brent who have taken the opportunity to vote Green in the general election and council by-elections of 2005.

We will not be giving up on you, so please don't give up on us.
