Brent Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers

Brent and Harrow Green Party supports BCDAS, (affiliated to the national Committee To Defend Asylum Seekers which is supported by the Green Party nationally).

The Committee To Defend Asylum Seekers is a pressure group with members from many political parties and members who belong to no party. It came into being in response to statements by both Labour and Conservative politicians which have scapegoated Asylum Seekers and sought to score political points by boasting how difficult it could be made to be an Asylum Seeker in Britain and how quickly Asylum Seekers could be deported. Police research has recently suggested that racist attacks on people often increase after such statements are publicised.

Brent Committee To Defend Asylum Seekers has been in existence for about 2 years. It has held 3 public meetings, several leaflettings of local supermarkets, a toy collection for asylum seekers' children, and mounted pressure on Brent council to improve its provision for asylum seekers', (which has contributed to the scrapping of food parcels). It has contributed
to the Home Office review of the voucher scheme and encouraged contributions from other organisations and individuals; (including Brent and Harrow Green Party). It sends out monthly mailings to members and holds fortnightly meetings at Brent Trades Council.
